When I first tried to connect to Stranger Cam, I got a weird Access Denied error. I’m not sure why exactly, but I wasn’t able to load the front page until I tried using a VPN. At a glance, the website sure looks nice. It seems like pretty obvious keyword-based SEO, which is fine, because it’s usually a good way to draw users who are interested in what you’re selling but may not know your brand.
Of course, presentations and layouts only count for so much, especially on a site like this. What any kind of chat platform really needs is a healthy userbase. I remember when Chatroulette first appeared online, looking like absolute shit. The ugly interface didn’t matter back then, as there was no competition, so the site managed to draw in the users despite the garbage-tier design.
Fortunately, StrangerCam.com looks nice and gets a couple million visits per month. That should translate directly to a nice, fat pool of potential randos to chat with at any given moment. Sure enough, when I checked out the site on a Monday afternoon, there were around 6,000 users live and ready to rock. Night or day, you’ll be in good company with thousands of other random video chat enthusiasts.
It’s worth mentioning that while Stranger Cam does have a dropdown menu of countries to choose from, they say most of their users are strangers in the USA. If you’ve tried other services and always ended up connected to foreigners who had no idea what you were saying or why you were shaking your dick at your webcam, this might help you find more folks who speak your language.
Another thing worth mentioning is that they have iOS and Android apps in the works. For now, you’ll have to settle for the web-based version of StrangerCam.com, but if they come through with those apps, it’ll open up another world of convenience with regards to random video chat. With no real barriers to entry, pretty much everybody can start chatting immediately, provided you’ve got the same basic technological access as everybody else you know.
I hit the button to start chatting. Stranger Cam asked me if I was male or female and asked me to certify that I’m over 18 and accept their Terms and Conditions. Your browser will ask if you want to give StrangerCam access to your camera and microphone, and you’ll obviously want to allow it if you want to make full use of the site.
“You are now connected to a stranger,” read the little message the top of my screen. If you’ve ever used a random video chat app, the interface will look and feel immediately familiar. Honestly, it’s the same setup as anywhere else: it shows your video feed, your connecting stranger’s webcam, and a chat window to type in if you feel your voice sounds too awkward. The layout is a little more visually appealing in my opinion, with the mellow color scheme and clean boxes.
The only two filter options are Gender and Country, and I left them both set to “All” in the beginning. The very first stranger I connected to showed me a glimpse of leg before disconnecting, replaced with a shot of a bathroom floor. The standard monthly rate is $14.99 a month, which is half the price you’d pay for your average premium porn site, but about fifteen bucks more than you’d pay for a free site. There’s also a weekly plan for six bones or yearly for $90, which is a better bang for your buck, provided you’re actually going to use the service on the regular.
They spell out the perks on the signup page, and they’re a little skimpy. Mainly, you’ll be paying for the Gender and Country filters, though they also offer some vague benefits like 24/7 support and “More Features Coming Soon.” They also mention that premium members won’t see ads, but to be honest, I didn’t see any spam at all during my visit. I always use an adblocker, as you should whenever you do anything online unless you’re some kind of fucking moron.
I wasn’t ready to splurge on a premium membership just yet, so I went back to the main page and flipped through a few more random cams. I’m not sure if I opened the floodgates or what, but goddamn, it was mostly random jack-off cams this time. Maybe this is something I should recommend to the queers over on MyGaySites, because the free version is going to be of limited use to the average straight wanker.
