History of the site
The name ‘SauceNAO’ is derived from a slang form of “Need to know the source of this Now!” which has in recent day grown very popular especially in forums, image boards, and other related sites. I have to agree the name is a perfect match!
As for this particular site it was designed and implemented by Xamayon, and the main search functionality was first made public in October 2008. The first index consisted of approximately 20k magazine pages and utilized a modified version of the engine developed by piespy for the IQDB project. As time went on, the steadily increasing load and ever growing image set prompted them to create their own more scalable engine, which was deployed to replace the IQDB backend in 2012. Since then, SauceNAO has grown substantially and now indexes more than a billion images from web services, anime, movies, TV shows, and various other sources.
SauceNAO is still not well developed and is pretty much a work in progress. The site is in constant need of being modifications, coverage is constantly being expanded, and new search technologies are always being experimented with.
Site design and navigation
Believe me when I say that there is nothing to write home regarding the site design. This is because it is basically characterized by a black background and a couple of sorting features, nothing more! Well, if you asked me, it feels like some fucking hollow, and you will have some getting used to because there is no such a thing as straightforwardness here. However, do not fret since the advanced search engine is easily accessible and the perfectly working links will help you get by easily.
Photo reverse search
This site is all about; finding the sources of various images including Hentai manga. The image Search Options provides a selection of highly customizable context menu options for images. These options allow for fast and efficient use of many different image searches related tools such as IQDB and SauceNAO. This same Image Search Options extension is currently available on both Chrome and Firefox. If there is enough interest in support for additional browsers, coverage can be expanded. Judging from the above updates schedule, either someone is shitting around their job, or this site is not shit at all, and there is even a great chance of you will not find sources of your preferred images. Well, while there aren’t many similar sites around we can only hope that something can be done before better competition comes knocking.
Blog posts
The blog section of the site is fucking boring and if you asked me they should have just named it; site announcements/news section because the dominant posts are generally about what images the site has recently uploaded, and it is even unfortunate that they are lagging behind because it seems to me like there is nothing going on here besides the dusting of the background. Take it from me, it’s all bullshit, and even the few posts that I came across were either Ads, technical or not even related.
Info lookup section
I was impressed to find an advanced feature is the ‘Info Lookup’ section. This search feature is especially important when a member deletes their account because a successful Sauce NAO Info Lookup would show their username, all of their indexed illustrations, and any other data contained in Sauce NAO’s growing historical archive. It sounds like it saves people’s asses, huh? It could save yours too!
Search limits
The limits refer to the number of searches possible and remaining for your account type. The short period is currently 30 seconds; the long period is 24 hours. Short remaining will return the lesser of the number of searches remaining for a short period, or for a long period.
Membership
Usually, when a site does not provision for extra features to members, I tell you outright; don’t waste your fucking time going through that shit unless you are one of those dumbass motherfuckers who would rather enjoy the nostalgic feeling of belonging. Well, for this site it is important that you register and upgrade your account to enjoy extra features but not to worry because registration is a simple and fast process as long as you have a username in mind and a goddamned valid email address.
Premium charges are pretty much affordable, and they include; $6.00 for 30 days, $16.00 for 90 days and $62.00 for 365 days. By upgrading your account, you will be able to perform more searches within a shorter period of time, request more results with each search, search using larger images, turn off ads, and take advantage of additional advanced functionality as they roll it out. It is also important to note that basic account holders cannot look up information.
Visit the settings section to upgrade and note that payments can be made through credit or debit cards and they also accept Bitcoins. Get to manage your transactions too at the history section. Am telling you these suckers make this whole upgrade process feel all buttered up perhaps because they are still working on the site even while it is currently in use. They have even asked well-wishers to support their course and so if you are one of those freaks with an extra coin you may as well hit the donate button.
What I like about the site
Despite the numerous disappointments on this site, I was glad to find a photo advanced search feature that assists you in easily narrowing down photo sources. The site’s premium charges are also quite favorable and the fact that the site is trying its fucking best to keep up with the latest technology is also something.
What I hate about the site
I found the site’s layout to be a major put off, it’s too plain and uninteresting for my tastes plus one takes some time to acquit themselves with the site because it is not straightforward to use by any means. Also, their blog section is basically annoying, and you will struggle to find anything that can interest you there. Besides, to my disappointment, the updates they boast of are nowhere near up to date with most of them lagging behind year’s back. What the fuck is wrong with these folks?
Suggestions that I have for the site
There is so much that needs to be done on this site, but for a start maybe they could start with making up your minds about their blog section; whether they want to make it a news section or a fucking real blog section. Also, the site’s design needs a serious overhaul if at all it exists. About the updates, they have to fucking do something, or this site gets buried with history.
