I’m not sure if developer Hunie Pot realized it at the time, but when they released the game in January, 2015, they were opening up the floodgates to all kinds of match-three adult-oriented games. Match-three games have been around for fucking forever – I don’t have to tell you that. And combining match-three with XXX content isn’t exactly a revelation in gameplay, either.
But by throwing HuniePop on Kickstarter months prior and actually getting it funded, HuniePot proved that adult games were ready for primetime. One of the first big XXX games to hit Steam, HuniePop proved that porn games are not the bargain-basement filler that they had traditionally been. It proved that adult games can be polished, refined, and most importantly, fun.

If you ever came across a fairy that gave a shit about getting you laid, what would you do? Take them up on the offer? Or would you become suspicious as fuck that it’s actually a dude dressed in a fairy outfit, thinking that he’s waiting to knock you out with a chloroform rag? I would probably opt for the second option, but our protagonist is naïve and chose the first option. He (or she depending on the gender you choose at the beginning of the game) is lucky that fairies exist in HuniePop; otherwise, he’d probably be some pervert’s meat slippers.
The hot chick at the beginning of the game turns out to actually be a fairy. They think you ‘are perfect’ for some reason, and want to help you to get laid more times than you can count. The perk is that they cannot hear or see the fairy either. So while you are going to get some blank stares at you if you speak to the fairy in public (since, you know, everyone would think you are talking to yourself), it’s a good way to get advice about women without anyone being wiser to the situation.
The result is that you have a fairy that is constantly rooting you on and urging you to just ‘go for it.’ It’s like having your own personal fairy to boss you around like in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, except you don’t get to fuck any fish pussy like Link. You have to stick to human pussy, which is alright in my book.
One thing that drove me fucking insane was the goddamn annoying dialogue from the fairy herself. This is all personal opinion, and you may not even notice it when you play. But the attitude that HuniePot tried to give her just does not work. She acts like a bitch for no reason at times, basically calls you a dumb ass when she gets a second, and her compliments come across as pandering because of this.
There is no consistency when it comes to the character. Sure, I get that she’s busting the character’s balls, but it comes across as the dev was trying way too hard to try and give her an attitude. Whoever does the character’s voice should probably get some voice acting lessons too. Listening to her felt like I was listening to goddamn nails on a fucking chalkboard, and I felt myself breathing a sigh or relief when she was gone. She’s such a pain to listen to, and I would suggest turning off the in-game voices at least when that character is on the screen.
Match-three gameplay can be hard as fuck
I won’t sugar coat it and tell you that HuniePop can be completed without much struggle. In fact, I had a hell of a time getting through some of these boards. And I had the game on normal difficulty! I could have switched to ‘Easy’, but I’m not pussy, either. Either way you slice it, HuniePop is going to give you a challenge. Depending on what you are looking for, that could be a good or bad thing.
If you want some smut accompanied with a challenging match-three game, then you’re probably going to enjoy HuniePop. If you are coming to the game in hopes of seeing a ton of ass and tits with gameplay that you can breeze through, well, you may not enjoy what you find. This isn’t a goddamn visual novel that you can complete on autopilot. Every move you make in HuniePop should be calculated.
Don’t think that this is one of the most challenging puzzle games of your life, though. If you have ever played games like Candy Crush Saga or any of the thousands of other match-three’s out there, you know what to expect. The gameplay can be challenging. Especially when you have a limited number of moves and each girl you are trying to get into bed with has different needs. You have to make your moves count, meaning you need to be paying attention.
Must match attributes to gain favor
Winning your dates isn’t merely a matter of matching the same colors together. You have to figure out what attributes are the most appealing to them. Whether it’s sexuality, affection, passion, joy, sentiment, etc., that each girl finds the most appealing, you must focus on the attributes that matter to them.
It matters, too. The more appealing attributes you match, the higher your score. With the goal of the game being to hit the goal score in the least amount of moves possible, you want to match the right attributes whenever possible. It’s easy to see which attributes they favor from greatest to least. You will see the score that they earn with each match, with some attributes giving you zero points (and in turn, wasting your move).
If you can figure out the most optimal way to match appealing attributes, you are going to get laid a fuck ton throughout HuniePop. The better your score, the more money you earn as well. The more money you make, the more and better gifts, food, and so on that you can purchase as well. Use these gifts to get more in favor with the girls, and again, increase your odds of getting fucked by them and unlocking their image in the gallery.
Wanted more smut
Even though I appreciate the challenging gameplay, in the end, I was hoping to see more naked hentai bitches. I was beginning to lose my patience, the more I played. I got through a few boards, and still, nothing. Getting to the action and seeing the hentai nude goodness takes way too fucking long. But then again, it isn’t that kind of game. You’re not going to get into the heat of the hentai images right away – you have to earn that shit.
Even so, I still was hoping that I would see…more. At least give me a nipple slip in between dates. Maybe have the hentai girl show her pussy if you get six matches in a row or something like that. As HuniePop stands, I found myself rushing through puzzles and hoping I didn’t have any more to complete before I could unlock an image in the gallery.
The game puts you in that mindset, and it is to its detriment. It’s a fun game, and the last thing I want to do is feel like I’m slogging through it. But when I feel like I’m saying to myself, ‘is it over yet,’ just to get a glimpse of a little hentai pussy, that’s exactly what the game becomes: a slog. Sprinkle more XXX hentai content into the game for good measure, and HuniePop would be better paced than it is.
In the end, HuniePop is chill as hell to play. No, you cannot play it in public like on the bus. But if you want to relax in the evening with your dick out and want a challenging match-three game, HuniePop is your answer. There needs to be a better balance between reward and challenging gameplay.
